Alzheimer’s and related dementias steal parts of our loved ones, but who they are and who they have been remains deeply rooted. Our Alzheimer’s/dementia program is a Certified Dementia Special Care unit as designated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Life Enrichment Programming
At East Longmeadow Skilled Nursing Center, our staff are trained to offer our Life Enrichment Programming based on the habilitation model of memory care developed jointly by Dr. Paul Raia of the Alzheimer’s Association and Joanne Koenig Coste, Alzheimer’s advocate and author. This approach advocates joining residents within their reality for happier, more successful days.
Our specialized memory care program focuses on each of our residents as individuals, respecting their personal histories, preferences and routines for the best possible quality of life.
Specialized Memory Care Neighborhood
Our secure, 20-unit Life Enrichment memory care neighborhood features furnished spacious private rooms, with plenty of room for familiar furniture from home.
Common areas are reminiscent of home, with a family room, dining area, kitchenette and Café/activities room. Plus, residents can comfortably enjoy the outdoors in our gated and locked courtyard.
Meals are served restaurant style with alternative menu options, and our staff learn resident preferences to encourage positive dining experiences. Snacks and hydration options are always available to support optimal health.
Engaging Activities Programming
Our memory care program Activities Director is supported by full-time activities staff and focuses on providing enhanced activities to accommodate resident interests and personal schedules. Hands-on activities from early morning into the evening provide opportunities for engagement and connection, with familiar activities such as gardening, cooking, brain teasers, and even karaoke. Our full calendar of activities typically includes:
- Gentle exercises such as morning stretch, balloon volley and armchair yoga
- Arts and crafts and coloring
- Folding and sorting
